The connection of the Hemulen's character to gardening was realized to the extent that with botanical precision I cut the stems of the lilies that had fallen in the frost and collected them in the compost. But I had to use the real researcher's judgment when I visited a relative with dementia and tried to pick out topics for our conversation from his remaining memories.
